Do astronomers become inactive researchers after they get tenure?

There is a popular misconception, even shared by some junior astronomers, that tenured faculty become unproductive researchers after they acquire tenure. A recent study by Helmut Abt and Honghan Zhou published in the Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific vol. 108, page 375, examined 214 tenured astronomers from 17 institutions including colleges and laboratories. They found that 48 percent published more after tenure was granted, 33 percent published between 50 % and 100 % of their pre-tenure rate, and 19 percent published significantly less after tenure. So, it isn't true that when you attain the security of tenure that you become unproductive .Those that fall behind often are heavily committed to administrative duties and the decision is not a personal one to leave research behind or 'goof off'.
