Would a jet engine work in space?

No because jet engines require the surrounding atmosphere to provide 'reaction mass' which is forced out the rear of the engine to provide forward thrust. Also, the air is compressed and its oxygen is burned with kerosene to provide the thrust. None of these ingredients are present in space unless you bring them with you, and then it is called a rocket engine!.
