Is there really a dark side to the Moon?

There is no place on the Moon where it is perpetually dark, because during New Moon as seen from Earth, the far side of the Moon is fully illuminated like the Full Moon. HOWEVER, there are a few deep craters on the north and south poles where the Sun may never rise so that a portion of these craters are in a semi-permanent shadow. It is there that some astronomers believe they may find traces of water ice locked in the soil. The total area of land in such shadows, however, is probably not more than a few square kilometers!
