There are many amateur astronomers who vie for the honor of having seen the youngest crescent Moon just after New Moon. It is difficult to observe this because it is lost in the glare of the twilight sky and requires perfect atmospheric seeing and the proper choice of observing site ahead of time. The current record holder is about 15 hours, I seem to recall.
