When astronomers announce their findings at the meeting of the American Astronomical Society, they are asked to submit abstracts of their findings for publication in the Bulletin of the American Astronomical Society for the months in which the meeting took place. These abstracts are not intended for non-astronomers, and contain LOTS of terminology specific to particular sub-disciplines in astronomy. We only get about 500 words of space to summarize what we are going to present, so that we have to use lots of shortcuts.
Results that are deemed to be of interest to the public are written-up as press releases in much simplified, and often spectacular, language.
