Someone recently showed me a 'pillar of fire' photograph showing stars being born. What was this all about?

I think what you are referring to is the fabulous images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope of the star forming region Messier 16. Have a look at the HST Images of 1995 archive under "Star Birth in M16" for the GIF image used in most newspapers and the accompanying text file of the Press Release. This is sometimes called the "Pillar of Gas".
