There was a report of a planet detected inside our solar system back in the mid-1990's but it turned out that the storw, which made many newspaper headlines, was a misunderstanding. What had ben discovered was a MINOR planet..in other words and asteroid or comet nucleus. There have, however, been plenty of bonefide planets detected by astronomers outside our solar system! The current count stands at about 40 as of May 2000.
