What is the difference between Greenwich Mean Time, GMT, and Universal Time, UT?

There is no difference. The former is what civilians would use just as we speak of Eastern Standard Time and Pacific Standard Time. UT is used by professionals to emphasize that this time zone is the 'standard' zone for all astronomical and other 'universal' time keeping.
