You might be thinking of the so-called Cosmic Strings. But the observations by the NASA COBE satellite seem to rule out anything as exotic as these things in the universe. The structure of the clustering of galaxies in space would be very much affected by them if they were present in enough numbers to be cosmologically interesting for missing mass.
