The modern difference is now between theoretical and observational astronomy. In the former, you are more concerned with using other astronomers data to figure out how things work. In observational astronomy, you are more interested in making the observations, collecting the data, building new instruments to help test various 'models' produced by the theoreticians, or by yourself!
