Was there an explosion on the Sun in January, 1997 that will affect the weather?

Yes there was a 'Coronal Mass Ejection' event on the Sun on January 5, and the plasma which was expelled reached Earth a few days later and knocked out the ATandT Telstar 401 communications satellite. You can read more about it over at the IMAGE/POETRY K12 education website where I have developed it into a middle school-level class activity theme.

No, it will not affect the weather...but if you were in space at the time and unprotected, it might have fried your butt.
