This mainly comes from measurements of the velocities of certain stellar populations near the sun, compared to the total mass we can detect near the sun in the form of stars. The deficiency is that the velocity dispersion of the stars seems to suggest that about twice as much material is present within a few hundred light years of the sun, than we can identify in luminous stars. This factor of two or so is also seen in nearby spiral galaxies.
