The color of a lunar eclipse depends entirely on the properties of the Earth's atmosphere through which the Sun's light passes enroute to the Moon. The visibility of these colors on the ground also depends on your local observing conditions. Sunlight passing through the Earth's atmosphere looses some of its blue color because of a processes called refraction. This causes the light to take on a redish color.
