Why are monkeys used in space experiments and not other animals?

Many kinds of animals have been used in space, not just monkeys! Spiders, ants, bees, single celled algae and amoeba...you name it. So far as I know, the Shuttle Program has not used primates in space because they are too heavy, cantankerous and not really very effective in answering the kinds of microscopic questions that space medicine is after answers to.
