Ouch! I don't read many astronomy books!!! In fact, I have not read any astronomy books in over a decade....at least not the non-technical kinds that is.
Carl Sagan's books are all my favorites beginning with "Intelligent life in the Universe" and ending with his "The Demon-Haunted World". Richard Leaky's "The Sixth Extinction" was also very troubling to me as was the "Demon-Haunted World" which I made the mistake of reading back-to-back. I was depressed for several weeks thereafter.
I have, of course, read Stephen Hawking's "A Brief History of Time", but also read Roger Penrose's "The Emperor's New Mind". I will not offer commentary on either of them since that is not what was asked in this question anyway.
I have read George Smoot's "Wrinkles in Time" and John Mather's "The Very First Light" which give very different takes on the history of the NASA/COBE program, and as an astronomer who had worked with COBE for the last 4 years, I was keenly interested in what my colleagues had to say about the official history of the project. Plus, I got some very nice dusk jacket inscriptions by both authors!
