What they have confirmed indirectly since the 1940's is that the physical vacuum seems to be inhabited by virtual particles, and this gives rise to many phenomena such as the Lamb Shift, vacuum polarization and the Cassimir Effect. No direct observation of virtual particle production seems possible due to the restrictions on the very process of observation set by Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle.
