I have trouble in thinking of a light year as a measure of distance not time. What should I do?

It is a measure of distance, but because it is based on the fastest signaling speed in the universe, it is also a measure of how far back in time an object emitted the light we now see. At 1 light years the object is 5.8 trillion miles away, but at this distance, the light we see was emitted one year ago. It gets worse for even more distant things!
