Physicist Freeman Dyson described this unfolding future scenario around 1977 and I believe D. Page and R. McKee wrote an article about it in Mercury magazine in the January/February 1983 issue. There have also been articles about this, I believe, in Sky and Telescope and I think in Scientific American magazines, although I do not recall the specific issues.
