In 'Deep Space 9', what kind of object is it that is shedding particles in the opening credits?

I have always assumed it is a comet, rendered as best as modern computer graphics can. It is a pretty skimpy one in terms of the amount of gas being ejected, but presumably it is far away from its parent star and not especially active yet. But since it is science fiction, it could be anything!
