I would think that the combined effective masses of the two holes would be immediately converted into a pulse of gravitational radiation, but it is not obvious to me that the event horizons would disappear. From what I understand, this calculation has not been performed on a supercomputer yet to really investigate what happens to the out-going pulse of radiation and the horizons. Perhaps some relativist reading this could enlighten me about this situation?
