Why are you answering so many questions?

I thought when I started that I would only get a few questions a week, not 5-10 a day! At a few a week, this kind of volunteer activity in education is probably not a bad thing to be involved with. But now it has gotten totally out of hand. I now find myself rather addicted to reading the next batch of questions and seeing if I can keep answering them fast enough and with the same level of thoroughness. I think it is like being an athlete and seeing how close to your limit you can get. I take a great pleasure in this activity, because after a decade of trying and failing to get a teaching position at a college or university, I find that this is an important outlet for my desire to help others. You do not get tenure by being altruistic like this, but for me it now is a source of great satisfaction. Now, if I could only find some way to make it a part of my 'day job' too!
