At the Autumnal Equinox in San Francisco we get more than 12 hours of daylight. Why is this?

The answer depends on a number of factors including the speed of the Earth in its orbit, and the inclination of the Ecliptic to the equatorial plane of the Earth. See other questions in this FAQ area for more details.
