During the early part of August, 1996, Jupiter was near RA = 16h 15m and dec=-20d 40'. The Moon was somewhere between 10h and 12h in RA and within 1 degree of the celestial equator. The brightest, red star 'between' them was Alpha Scorpi, Antares, which is a brilliant, blood-red supergiant star located at RA = 16h 29m and dec=-26d which would have made it rather close to Jupiter at that time. This is my best guess from the details given by the sighting.
