Well...that's the way I started out, but I really do not see any particular advantage to being systematic about observing the sky. Buy the biggest telescope you can afford, and get to know the constellations by observing them with your naked eye. There is little more that you will learn using binoculars that you cannot learn much better with a low power eyepiece on a big telescope. Plus, you will have very exciting views of the Moon, stars and planets to keep you busy!
